South Fork Nooksack River Watershed Planning

South Fork Nooksack River Watershed Planning

Client: Nooksack Tribe

Case Study: Peak facilitated a South Fork Nooksack River Watershed community engagement effort to inform watershed planning and engage citizens on issues, challenges, and desired outcomes affecting their tight-knit community. Challenges included high flows and flooding in the winter, reduced streamflows in the summer, increasing sediment and stream temperatures, and worsening drought conditions in the summer. Year-long community engagement included a survey of residents and facilitation of local workgroups culminating in an in-person public learning and sharing meeting held in Acme, WA which drew about 75 people from the community.

Impact: The survey and public input contributed to a better understanding of the concerns of the people living in this rural and isolated community. This watershed community engagement effort queued up subsequent community engagement led by members of the community.
