Case Study: North Cascades Organics LLC hired Peak to develop a Farm Food Safety Plan to support Foothills Farm’s GAP and FSMA requirements for food safety.
Impact: A Farm Food Safety Plan will address systems and production procedures required by GAP and FSMA requirements. GAP (Good Agricultural Practices) – a voluntary third-party certification – verifies that fruits and vegetables are produced, packed, handled, and stored safely to minimize contamination. FSMA represents food safety modernization legislation aimed at transforming the nation’s food safety system. Importantly, it shifts the focus from responding to foodborne illness to preventing it.

The FDA’s seven major rules for FSMA are ensuring the safety of the food supply is a shared responsibility. This is difficult to juggle when there are so many inputs from the global supply chain for human and animal food. The FSMA emphasizes a comprehensive, science-based protocol.
