Client: Samson Rope, Bellingham, WA
Case Study: Samson hired us to help them understand the impact their manufacturing has on climate change by measuring their Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions. As a company constantly seeking to improve the sustainability of its operations, Samson hired us to help them understand the impact Samson has on climate change through its GHG emissions. We calculated Samson Rope’s (Samson) first Scope 1 and 2 Greenhouse Gas (GHG) inventory. Scope 1 emissions consist of emissions from equipment, vehicles, and facilities Samson owns and/or operates, and Scope 2 is calculated based on emissions from generated electricity, heat, steam, or cooling that Samson purchases. Samson operates out of four facilities in three countries. Each facility has its own energy mix, equipment, and processes, so each required a unique approach.
Impact: The project concluded with two deliverables: a Scope 1 and 2 GHG Inventory Memo detailing trends and causes of emissions, and a calculation spreadsheet tool that Samson can use to calculate its own Scope 1 and 2 GHG inventories in the future. Now that Samson has calculated their Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, Samson will next tackle their Scope 3 emissions – a more complex task that involves delving deeper into their supply chain and the resulting GHG emissions.
